Shipping the man offshore

Samoa – from the eyes of the serial entrepreneur’s wife!

Well, what does one do with a man who drives her crazy at times – ship him off to Samoa?

Now that’s a thought.

What didn’t he pack into his two containers, bound for ventures unknown? You have to know ladies, sometimes these men just have to get out of the box and let their hair down!

When I say a trip to Samoa will challenge your whole existence, you have to believe it. Sure, you can make it a sterile visit by staying in resort by the beach, either close to the airport, or way over the furthest side of the island. You can certainly have a quiet relaxing time, just avoiding the heat and lounging around the pool. Many think that IS Samoa and that’s all they what they want from a holiday.

But, some take the adventurous path – the road less travelled!

Get out amongst the people of the South Coast, those that have remained since the Tsunami left them grieving and finding higher ground. Watch the young boys scramble up to the top of the coconut palm and throw you down a drink. His mum will gouge it open for you on a spike in the ground even while he is up the tree.

And while this is going on, just a few feet away the aunties are weaving up new roofs for their shelters they are building as they seek refuge from another ‘big wave’. A bit sad, really, that they don’t realise that we are driving on the coast road to see them, without fear, because we have already heard via the Internet that the wave has passed Samoa by this time, without any damage.

Nevertheless, the young boy is asked to throw down lots more coconuts, because they don’t have running water this far up in the plantations, and the coconuts will provide food and drink for them while they wait out the now ‘perceived’ danger.

Take a trip back across the high hills through the Cross Island Road, and you will pass an amazing sight – a huge waterfall (seen from a very scary viewing platform that seems to be suspended on the side of the cliff!) I suggest you have your lunch after you have seen this one, if your stomach is up to it!

Maybe that’s enough in this heat for one day! Thankfully, we are in an air-conditioned car as we cruise back down into Apia with the sun setting. Certainly a different world to that we are used to. Maybe it wasn’t too bad an idea to ship him offshore after all.
